My name is Shukri Mohamed; I am a 13 year old middle school student, and just like most American children I didn’t know much about the outside world. However that all changed after I came across an article about the Ogaden region.

Background

The Ogaden is a territory that is populated mainly by ethnic Somalis and is illegally occupied by Ethiopia. During 1891 Ethiopian King Menelik II tried to claim this territory but was eventually unsuccessful. It later became a British protectorate after Great Britain and the “Chiefs” in Ogaden signed a treaty in 1896 that guaranteed Ogaden’s security under British rule. After the WWII, Great Britain ceded the Ogaden to Ethiopia without the agreement or knowledge of its citizens.

Human rights violations

The Ogaden is a vast under developed land that has been marginalized by Ethiopian governments. It has an estimated population of 8 million, of those 90% are nomads, unfortunately the entire region has less than 15% literacy rate. Basic services such as water and heath care are non-existent in most parts of the Ogaden.

The Ogaden is also a military zone where the Ethiopian government is deliberately committing human rights violations against the civilians. The government kicked out all humanitarian aid organizations including the Red Cross and MSF/Doctors Without Borders.

Current situation

The Ogaden is currently isolated from the rest of the world as the Ethiopian government imposed an economic, humanitarian and media blockade. Basically the people are between death, prison, and refugee camps. Most of them live in the refugee camps in neighboring countries; some are either dead or in prison, while the remaining live under intimidation and fear. Most women in the Ogaden are raped and tortured daily and sometimes even killed as they are most vulnerable. Sadly my own aunt was one of the victims who were raped. This is not something new, it has been happening quite sometime in the Ogaden.

Thousands continue to be killed, thousands continue to be displaced, thousands continue to be raped and the genocide continues.

So I ask, why is the world watching the genocide in the Ogaden, doesn’t it hear the cries of the mothers, fathers and helpless children in the Ogaden?

We shouldn’t let this happen on our watch, so let’s all please take action today and be the voice of the voiceless in the Ogaden.

27/09/2012 Ogaden men in Kenya army accused of “Operation kill and exterminate” in Somalia’s Jubbaland and vulgar language used by Drs Fatuma Lamungu Nur, PHD in International Politics- New York, USA.

(MOL)-First and foremost the language used is not acceptable and well beyond spoken by someone who is a Dr and seeking PHD .

I feel pity for her because of her low intelligence of using vague language. She seemed learned on paper, but she looks empty in social values and norms.

I am also touched and felt the pain of killing innocent people all over the world with no exceptional to Somalia be it in middle Juba,  Lower Juba, Gedo, Mogadishu among other places. 

Dr fatuma has to apologise for the bad language she used against Ogaden. It seems she has taken the liberation of Kismaio to be clan based? Of which I agree as Lower Juba is owned by Ogaden just the way Gedo and Abudak is owned by marehan.

If  I remind you  the composition of Ogaden, they are:  of Absame community among them Mohamed Zuber, Bahgeri, Maqabul, Abudwak, Auliyahan, Abdala Rer mohamed among others.

In fact, Abudak district in Galgadud region was once inhabited by Ogaden/Abudaq sub lan.  But because of pastoral life; they moved southward Somalia and that is how Ogaden are inhabiting in Lower Juba and in Northern Kenya (Wajir and Garissa).

By accusing government officials from Ogaden community is disrespectful to them as Merahan were the first people to be hosted in Ogaden land like Wajir in Kenya when Siyad Bare was kicked out of Somalia. We gave him all the necessary requirements he  needed at that difficult period he which he was undergoing hardships. 

Merehan and harti were accepted by Ogadens as their brothers and sisters because of the Darod factor. Same to the other clans from Somalia.

Somalis are homogenous community. They help each other regardless of their clan differences. It is only the political and warlords who group people because of leadership and resource accumulations.

If Ogadens were bad people, other communities could not have been accepted. We value the common value of humanity and tolerance. The current objectives of  operation of KDF in Somalia is to  clear the Al shabab from the region as they have been constant threats to our national security.  The same operations are to be done in Gedo region.

There is no truth in saying Jubbaland is ment for Ogadens?  Do  you think Kenya is creating another county like Israil which was created  in 1947? For your information, Ogadens are in Jubaland and they are the owners of this land. There is no other clan that can claim. Communities co exits and that doesn’t mean you loose your ability to claim your land.

Always when two bulls fight the grass will suffer. That is way civilian casualties are unaffordable as you don’t know who is civilian or combatant individual. As they have melted down in the civilians. I was not  there at Jana Abdala neither were you. What you are circulating is rumour mongering.

Naming innocent leaders on the page will not add any value. The operation is Kenyan and Kenya has forty two tribes. When you say KDF is dominated by one clan? Where are the rest: Kikuyus, Kalenjins, Kambas, Luos, Masai, Degodias and the like?

It seems you are short of tribes in Kenya. People are employed according to merits in Kenyan forces recruitment. It is not like Somalia when clans are picked on the basis of tribalism .

My learned friend seems she is in another world. How did this majerten and marehan came to Kismaio in 1990s? This are the fellows who were kicked from Mogadishu by Hawiye after the civil war. The Darods were pushed southwards to look for there kins- ogaden who were in Lower Juba and in Northeastern Kenya. 

There was no one time Kenya army helped warlords in Jubbaland. What was the relationship between Gen. Morgan and Gen Mohamud?. Morgan is  Harti and Mohamud is Ogaden. Where hae they ever met?

Let me remind you. When general Morgan, Col: Bashir (Biliqo) and Marehan clans were kicked out of Kismaio by Col Omar Jes and Mohamed Farah Aid were in the same camp (USC/SLA).

After less than eight months, Morgan captured Kismaio with the help of Jala Darod camp (Marehan, Majerten, Awliyahan, Bartire, Galjecel) and Belgium troops who were under UNITAF.

When SLA were kicked out of Kismaio in Oct, 1993 , Gen. Morgan became the de facto leader of Jala Darod in Kismaio. Gen. Morgan ruled Kismaio until 1998 when he was kicked out by Marehan and Jess again. This made marehan under Bare Hirale took the  control of Kismaio until 2006 when Islamic Union courts came and  they, marehans, were removed. All this circles Ogadens were part and parcel of Jubbaland as they lived in Afmadow, Badhadhe, Kismaio, Dhobley, Marerey among many places.

To give you straight answer regarding the recruitment of Ogaden youth to liberate Jubbaland? I say NO. As the recruitment was initiated by TFG. The youth came from different clans Marehan, Ogaden and Harti. Do you want to tell me that the TFG soldiers fight in Gedo are from Marehan alone?. There is already men fighting along KDF and they are the ones who will lead Jubbaland.

 

In conclusion

 

Jubbaland will be liberated in due course. There is no doubt that the owners of the land will be given the priority to govern the land. The rest of Somalis will be accepted as community co existing with Ogadens in Jubbaland. So let Marehan and Majerten to focus on the ancestral land- Gedo, Puntland and Galgadud region. The fear of the unknown should not worry your life. Azania has no position at the moment as Raskamboni and TFG are forefront to this liberation. Other elements making noise from NY and Nairobi will continue making noise. Nothing will come on silver plate.
